Abstract

The article examines the ecological functions and current state of forest ecosystems in the Penza Region. The regional forests cover approximately 1 million hectares (22% of the territory) and perform essential ecological functions: climate regulation through carbon dioxide absorption, atmospheric air purification, soil erosion prevention, and habitat provision for numerous plant and animal species. The forest fund of the region is predominantly represented by coniferous and mixed forests with prevailing pine, oak, birch, and aspen. Particular attention is given to the characteristics of specially protected natural areas - Akhunsky Pine Forest, Zolotarevsky Pine Forest, and Svetlopolyansky Forest including their establishment history, species composition, and ecological significance. The study analyzes the main threats to forest ecosystems: illegal logging, forest fires, fungal tree diseases, and anthropogenic pressure. Statistical data on the reduction of the forest fund area by 1,000 hectares during 2021-2025 and the extent of fire-affected lands are presented. The legal framework for forest management regulation is reviewed, including regional legislation on timber harvesting quotas. The role of federal and regional forest conservation programs is highlighted, as well as the importance of implementing the Federal State Information System of the Forest Complex for improving forest resource management efficiency.
