Molecular complexity of genetic systems: biochemical mechanisms and regulatory networks

Abstract
This study presents a comprehensive analysis of the current understanding of genetic systems with an emphasis on the molecular mechanisms of regulation and network interactions. Based on the integration of data from large-scale projects (ENCODE, The Human Cell Atlas) and the latest achievements in the field of molecular biology (2020-2023), a systematic analysis of four key aspects was carried out: the structural and functional organization of genes, the architecture of regulatory networks, the mechanisms of genetic switches and epigenetic regulation. The study demonstrates that about 80% of the human genome is functionally active, and a significant part of this activity is related to regulatory elements rather than protein coding. The analysis of regulatory networks revealed the presence of more than 4,000 regulatory motifs involved in the control of gene expression, while about 60% of these modules are conserved in vertebrates. Special attention is paid to the role of epigenetic mechanisms: a meta-analysis of more than 1,000 epigenomes identified over 2 million regulatory elements subject to epigenetic modification. It has been found that disorders in the work of genetic switches are associated with about 30% of known genetic diseases. The results of the study support the concept of "extended synthesis" in evolutionary biology, emphasizing the equal importance of the processes of natural selection, self-organization and epigenetic inheritance in the evolution of genetic systems. The data obtained is essential for the development of personalized medicine and the development of new therapeutic strategies.
